International Tensions Rise : Plot to Assassinate Pannun

In a recent turn of events, the United States claims to have thwarted a sinister plot to assassinate Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil. A UK-based daily broke the news, reporting that the US had not only prevented the conspiracy but also issued a stern warning to the Indian government. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India acknowledged receiving “some inputs” during a recent security discussion with the US, shedding light on a concerning ‘nexus’ involving organized criminals, terrorists, and others.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, in a statement, addressed the situation without explicitly mentioning Pannun or the UK daily’s report. Bagchi revealed that the shared inputs pertained to a nexus involving organized criminals, gun runners, terrorists, and others, leaving the location unspecified. “During the course of recent discussions on India-US security cooperation, the US side shared some inputs pertaining to a nexus between organized criminals, gun runners, terrorists, and others. The inputs are a cause of concern for both countries, and they decided to take necessary follow-up action,” he stated. India, taking these inputs seriously, is actively examining the issues within relevant departments due to their potential impact on national security interests.

The US, having averted the alleged plot to assassinate Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, officially communicated its concerns to the highest levels of the Indian government. The White House emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We are treating this issue with utmost seriousness, and it has been raised by the U.S. Government with the Indian Government, including at the senior-most levels.” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson conveyed that Indian counterparts expressed surprise and concern over the matter.

Simultaneously, Indian authorities issued their own statement, acknowledging the inputs shared by the US about terrorists and organized criminals, deeming them a “cause of concern” for both nations. New Delhi confirmed the decision to take necessary follow-up action, heightening the significance of the situation. This development unfolds against the backdrop of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s previous claims of “credible allegations” linking the Indian government to the death of another Sikh separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, just two months ago.

In an intriguing twist, a report from the Financial Times, relying on unnamed sources, revealed that US federal prosecutors had filed a sealed indictment against at least one alleged perpetrator of the plot. The report suggested that one individual charged in the indictment is believed to have already left the United States, adding an air of mystery to the unfolding narrative.
