Erica Robin’s Miss Universe Bid Ignites Controversy in Pakistan

Erica Robin’s Miss Universe Bid Ignites Controversy in Pakistan. Karachi’s rising star, Erica Robin, achieved a ground breaking milestone when she recently clinched the coveted title of ‘Miss Universe Pakistan’. With her triumph, she is now all set to represent Pakistan on the global stage at the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in El Salvador. Notably, this is the first time a Pakistani model has secured a place in this prestigious international beauty pageant.

While enthusiasts around the world celebrated Robina’s remarkable feat, her selection as Pakistan’s representative in the Miss Universe pageant sparked controversy among some of the country’s politicians and religious leaders. One such religious scholar, Taqi Usmani, publicly criticized Robin and expressed his disapproval of beauty pageants and called on the government to take action against the organizers of the event. Pakistani Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan of the Jamaat-e-Islami party also joined the chorus of critics demanding to know who was behind the organization of the pageant, calling it a “shameful act”.

In response to the senator’s objections, Pakistan’s interim prime minister, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, ordered the country’s intelligence agency to launch an investigation into the organizers of the event. The aim of this investigation was to find out how they were reportedly able to stage the parade without the country’s official approval. Kakar himself condemned the entire incident as a “shameful act” and characterized it as “an insult and exploitation of women in Pakistan”.

Amidst this controversy, Erica Robin acknowledged the huge responsibility she carries as the first Pakistani Miss Universe contestant.

The Miss Universe Pakistan pageant was held at Brenna Kottefaru Resort in Raa Atoll, Maldives on October 5. The 72nd edition of the Miss Universe pageant is scheduled for November 18, 2023 at the National Gymnasium in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Despite the controversy, Erica Robin remains undaunted. She is determined to serve as an ambassador of peace and goodwill and strive to showcase the positive side of Pakistan. In an interview with The National, she said she wanted to show the beautiful side of Pakistan, away from all the negativity and hatred seen in some media.

It is important to note that some of the objections against Robin’s participation are based on misconceptions. While some naysayers have raised concerns about the swimsuit round, it is not mandatory for Miss Universe contestants to wear bikinis on stage. At the Miss Universe 2021 pageant, Bahrain’s representative received a standing ovation during the swimsuit round for wearing a fully covered and flowy active wear outfit.

In addition, the debate regarding event organizers is resolved by understanding that Miss Universe rules allow any entity to hold a permit to host local pageants. For example, the rights to Miss Universe Pakistan, as well as Miss Universe Bahrain and Miss Universe Egypt, are owned by the Dubai-based Yugen Group.

Hailing from Pakistan’s Christian minority community, Erica Robin sees Miss Universe as an ideal platform to showcase women’s achievements in various fields. They believe in the competition’s mission to advocate and strengthen meaningful causes and strive to make the world a better place. Robin passionately expresses his love for Pakistan, describing it as his home, and intends to be a harbinger of positivity and celebrate the country’s virtues.
